TANIA WILLIS
Tania Willis is an award-winning illustrator and educator whose work has been profoundly influenced by her life in Hong Kong and exploration of South East Asia. Her illustrated world is defined by colour, pattern, warmth and humour, all drawn directly from her experiences in this vibrant region. Now based in Northumberland, Tania is also an acknowledged map maker who continues to enjoy presenting the road less travelled. In the 23 years living in Hong Kong, the unchanged visual language of Hong Kong becomes her inspiration. All those traditional patterns, designs & colours ( Star Ferry & Tram green, wet market lamp red etc ). Many of these things are from the 1940s / 50s onwards & are still in everyday use in the most humble and ordinary of objects. They tell a story about the history of Hong Kong. She sees an accidental beauty in them and describe them as the emblems of character of HK people - playful, pragmatic & stoic!
